Event Day Activities

Welcome to the first annual Capitola Plein Air Event!
All event day activities are free to the public, but bring your checkbook or credit card for the fine art sale, and take home a piece of Capitola!

UPDATE from your event committee 11/8/15, 10am:

While we hoped it would wait one more day to arrive, we are finally getting that rain we need so badly. That means we are OFFICIALLY moving to  Capitola Community Center @ Jade Street Park, 4400 Jade Street, today from 12-6!

Saturday, November 7

8:30 am: Artists register and set up easels around Capitola Village, Esplanade, Depot Hill, New Brighton Beach, and the Jewel Box.

9 am – 5 pm: Watch more than 40 professional and amateur artists painting live throughout the day! Best viewing times are between 10 AM and 2 PM.

Sunday, November 8

NOTE: In case of rain, Sunday, November 8 activities will be held at the Capitola Community Center at Jade Street Park (4400 Jade St, Capitola, CA 95010)

8:30 am – noon: Some artists may continue painting around Capitola, while event site is set.

12-2 pm: Art sales begin in Esplanade Park while the judging of entries is happening at the bandstand.

Make art happen at the pop up community art-stop, where all ages can create a project with the help of Mariposa’s Art teachers, or create an element for the public art project also underway.

Kids of all ages can win prizes at with the smARTphone Scavenger Hunt! Check out the live jazz music near the bandstand!

2-3 pm: Judge and curator Susan Hillhouse Leask will give her presentation: “A History of Plein Air and How I Judge a Painting in the Open Air.”

3 pm: Prizes awarded!

Professional Division Prizes
~1st Place: winning entry will be purchased for $1500, added to the City’s public art collection.
~2nd Place: winning entry will be purchased for $750, and added to the City’s public art collection.

Amateur Division Prizes
~$100 cash for the winning entry.
~Other ribbons will also be awarded.

3-6 pm: Live music,  art pop-up activities, and fine art sales continue.
